Physiotherapy helps to restore movement and function when someone is affected by pain, injury, illness, or disability.
Physiotherapy is a science-based profession and takes a ‘whole person’ approach to health and wellbeing. At the core is the patient’s involvement in their own care, through education, awareness, empowerment, and participation in their treatment.
Physiotherapists are trained at University to assess, diagnose and treat a variety of conditions that affect a person’s physical function.
Physiotherapy can be particularly beneficial if you are suffering from any of the following:
A GP or Consultant referral is not required for self-referral to Physiotherapy.
On your first appointment you will be seen by a member of the Physiotherapy team.
The therapist will discuss with you the reason for your referral. You will be asked questions about how your problem affects you as well as your general health and lifestyle.
This will be followed by a physical examination to determine what might be responsible for producing your symptoms.
At the end of the assessment, the physiotherapist will explain their findings with you and discuss a proposed plan of action including the need for any further appointments. Every opportunity will be given for you to ask questions.
The physiotherapist will agree acceptable goals with you and discuss the most appropriate action to take. This may be advice and home exercises, a period of treatment at the practice or referral to another service.
Physiotherapy treatment will always include condition advice and education, targeted rehabilitation and exercise prescription. Depending on the nature of the problem, treatment may also involve manual therapy such as massage, mobilisations and manipulation of the body, acupuncture or electrotherapy to stimulate the healing process.
